Helen Gates and John (Jack) Eaton, 1930s
Helen Gates and John (Jack) Eaton, 1930s

My parents met at the H-Bar-G while working at the dude ranch in the late 1930s. My mother (Hazel Eaton Barber) and her father John (Jack) Eaton worked at the ranch in the 1930's for Helen Gates. Jack took the "dudes" mostly from back east out for trail rides and mom worked at the ranch. Some time in the late 1930s my dad Norm Barber came out from New York for the summer to work at the ranch as well. Apparently it was not love at first site as years later she would tell the story of how she threw a knife at him in the kitchen during an argument.

However, after she graduated from CO State College for Education (Greely, CO) in 1942, and Norm from Lehigh Universtiy in PA in 1941, they were married in Denver on October 15th 1944 and honeymooned in Estes Park, where they later had a cabin. I was born in 1946 in Denver.

Well this adds another piece to the long history of the ranch, would be great to see more of the early history.

Norm died in 1992 and Hazel in 2006. Lot of good memories left.
